Choice Action Toolkit (CAT)

Modified: 01/16/2007

The Choice Action Toolkit (CAT) is a collection of tools for activists like you. In addition to the basic tools you can download now, each month we will provide you with new tools specific to the issue of the month. September's theme is, Sex Education In California: Is Your School Following the Law? On January 1, 2004 new requirements for sex education programs in our schools were set in place. California law now states that if a school offers sex education, that curricula must be medically accurate, age appropriate, and starting in grade 7 must cover contraceptive effectiveness as well as abstinence.

Although these requirements are the law, the state does not have an enforcement mechanism to make sure school districts are compyling with them. Therefore it is up to activists like us to make sure our schools are following the law. Abstinence Only programs may still be operating in a school near you, we need to work together to replace those programs with comprehensive sex education. The specialized tools for this month focus on the actions you can take to educate the public and your school system about the new law mandating comprehensive sex education. Click on the links below to learn more about the revised requirements and see how you can be a watch-dog in your local school district.
