Does your pharmacy carry Plan B®?

Modified: 02/07/2007

On August 24, 2006 - after a three-year delay - the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) finally put women’s health before politics and agreed to allow women age 18 and over to buy Plan B®, also known as the “morning-after” pill, without a prescription.

In California, women under the age of 18 can still obtain Plan B® without a prescription from a specially trained pharmacist. California is one of nine states that allow pharmacists to directly provide women with emergency contraception without having to first get a prescription, even before the FDA’s decision.

Ensure that your pharmacy is stocking and dispensing Plan B®

1. Review the sample script and tips below for calling your pharmacy
2. Take notes and report your findings on our online survey

Sample Call Script

May I speak with the pharmacist? (If possible, please record the name of the pharmacist with whom you speak.)

Do you carry Plan B®, the “morning after” pill?

IF YES: Great! How much does it cost?

IF NO: Is Plan B® out of stock or do you not carry it?

Thank you so much.

Pharmacy Call Tips

1. Keep good records: Take notes on the pharmacy you called, who you spoke with, any information you are given, and what their responses were.  This will help us follow up and take action.

2. Speak to the correct person: Ask to speak with the pharmacist or pharmacy manager as he or she will be best informed about what products the pharmacy stocks.

3. Call during a slow time: Avoid calling on a Monday since that is the busiest day for most pharmacies. Likewise, hours at the start of the work day, end of the work day, and during lunch can also be very busy. In some communities, pharmacies are not open late so it is advisable to call before 6 p.m.

4. Be polite: Should you encounter a pharmacist who is not fully educated about Plan B® or does not stock the product, remember to remain polite. Note the incorrect information you were provided or the refusal to stock Plan B® and report your findings on our online survey.
