In Our State

For more than three decades, a woman’s right to choose has been a defining issue in election campaigns across America.

NARAL Pro-Choice California elects pro-choice candidates, promotes pro-choice public policy, and engages pro-choice Californians in the political process.

Follow the links to the left to learn more about pro-choice legislation in California and where your legislators stand on Choice issues.

Our Successes
  • Helped defeat Proposition 4, the third anti-choice ballot initiative, in November 2008.
  • Educated more than 95,000 activists and volunteers across the state during the 2008 election cycle.
  • Mobilized more than 1,000 activists during the 2008 election cycle.
  • Helped increase the pro-choice majority in Sacramento by electing three new pro-choice members of the Assembly in traditionally anti-choice seats and held a pro-choice seat in the Senate.
  • Held action summits and message trainings in Napa, Santa Rosa, LA, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
  • Worked with local leaders in Sonoma County to successfully stop the closure of the only area hospital that provides comprehensive reproductive care.
  • Provided leadership training opportunities for students and young adults through our internship program and campus organizing program.

What’s Next
  •  Expose so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) throughout California. CPCs present themselves as legitimate healthcare clinics and then use misinformation, intimidation and sometimes even harassment to block women from making informed health-care decisions.
  • Organize “Forum for Choice 2010: A Candid Conversation With Our Next Governor,” an opportunity for pro-choice Californians to hear how each candidate views a woman’s right to choose, privacy, and the government’s role in reproductive health care decision-making.
  • Recruit and train activists throughout the state to identify and stop anti-choice attacks at the local level.
  • End the annual fight to defeat dangerous parental-notification ballot initiatives by reforming the current ballot-initiative process.
