United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is the world's largest international source of funding for population and reproductive health programs.
In late 2001, Congress approved $34 million in funding for UNFPA, and President Bush signed the bill containing the appropriation. However, for two years in a row, President Bush has unilaterally cancelled the funding.
UNFPA works with governments and non-governmental organizations, at their request, to support programs that help women, men and young people plan their families, avoid accidental pregnancies, undergo pregnancy and childbirth safely, avoid sexually transmitted diseases and combat violence against women.
President Bush has accused the UNFPA of supporting China’s coercive sterilization and abortion policies, and continues to withhold funding, even though a team handpicked by President Bush and the White House had recommended the $34 million approved by Congress should be released, stating that they found "no evidence" that UNFPA participated in Chinese government population control policies.
The UNFPA does not provide support for abortions or abortion related activities anywhere in the world.
