NARAL Pro-Choice California Congratulates California Voters for Electing Strong Pro-Choice Candidates to All Statewide Offices

San Francisco, Calif., Nov. 5, 2010 –Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, praised California voters for sending a strong message to candidates in the state and across the country that they are not willing to compromise their pro-choice values. As of Wednesday afternoon, the California Secretary of State’s office was reporting a 15,000-vote lead for Kamala Harris in the race for Attorney General. Assuming that she retains that lead once all ballots are counted, voters will have elected pro-choice leaders to every single statewide office in the state of California.

"This election cycle, Californians were faced with a slew of candidates who tried to make voters forget about their anti-choice views and their disregard for women’s reproductive rights,” said Everitt. "But on Election Day, California reaffirmed its position as the nation’s pro-choice leader and reminded our elected officials that a woman’s right to choose is not a topic that can be ignored nor used as a bargaining chip. California voters refuse to compromise on this issue – last night’s election made that point loud and clear.”

An impressive 85 percent of all candidates endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice California’s PrivacyPAC were successful in their elections, including candidates at the statewide and state legislative levels. PrivacyPAC contributed $30,600 in donations to its endorsed candidates this cycle and employed efforts to support them throughout the campaign season through canvassing, phone banking, social media, an online video, and member outreach – including mailing a pro-choice voter guide to over 22,000 members statewide.
