Statement on the Safe and Early Access Bill (SB 1338)

While the safe early access proposal had strong support in the Legislature, SB 1338 was one vote shy of passage in California Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee, so the bill has been taken off the file for the May 7 hearing. The data from the UC San Francisco study that led to this bill shows that trained clinicians can safely provide early abortion care in their communities. Major health care provider organizations support the current version of the bill, and no major doctor or nursing group opposes it.  The issue of access to early abortion care for women across California remains an important issue and we will continue to review our options for ensuring that all women have access to care by providers they know and trust in the communities where they live.
