STATEMENT BY KATE MICHELMAN, PRESIDENT OF NARAL
Pro-Choice America in Support of Over-the Counter Access to Plan B Emergency Contraception FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 16, 2003
STATEMENT BY KATE MICHELMAN, PRESIDENT OF NARAL
PRO-CHOICE AMERICA IN SUPPORT OF OVER-THE-COUNTER ACCESS TO PLAN B EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
Leading Reproductive Rights Group Urges President Bush to Make "Compassionate Conservatism" More than Just a Slogan Washington, D.C – If the U.S. Food and Drug Administration decides to switch the emergency contraception Plan B® from prescription-only to over-the-counter, it will be one of the most significant steps in decades to reduce unintended pregnancies and the need for abortion. If George W. Bush is serious about making "compassionate conservatism" something more than a slogan, he will work with us to get the application to the FDA approved.
NARAL Pro-Choice America has urged our members to let the FDA know of their support -- prompting more than 20,000 e-mails in just a few days last week -- because we believe in the promise of emergency contraception. I have a vision…It is a vision of a truly pro-choice America. Not just an America where women have the legal right to choose abortion, but an America where women have the social and economic freedom to choose from a full range of reproductive options.
Unfortunately, the President's spokesman seemed to suggest last week that today's hearing would be nothing more than a legally-required formality. I hope that is not the case, and that we can work together in good faith to expand access to the measure that has shown greater success than any other in preventing unintended pregnancy.
