FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 16, 2006 NARAL Pro-Choice California Announces 2006 Endorsements California chapter focuses on five key legislative districts; backs Angelides, other pro-choice leaders in races for statewide offices
SAN FRANCISCO, California – NARAL Pro-Choice California, the state’s leading advocate for privacy and a woman’s right to choose, has announced its endorsement of 13 pro-choice candidates in the November 7 election.
NARAL Pro-Choice California is focusing on five key legislative districts to preserve and strengthen the Legislature’s pro-choice majority. The organization is supporting Wiley Nickel for Senate, District 12; James Cook for Assembly, District 10; Terry Coleman for Assembly, District 15; Lyn Shaw for Assembly, District 38; and Maxine Sherard for Assembly, District 78.
“Californians do not want divisive legislative attacks on a woman’s right to choose like we see in other states—and the best way to protect our pro-choice values is by voting for pro-choice candidates like the ones we’re endorsing today,” said Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. “These candidates support Californians’ shared values of freedom, privacy, and personal responsibility. That means support for better access to birth control, honest and accurate sex education, and safe, legal abortion.”
In addition to its legislative endorsements, NARAL Pro-Choice California is also backing Phil Angelides for governor, John Garamendi for lieutenant governor, John Chiang for controller, Bill Lockyer for treasurer, Jerry Brown for attorney general, and Cruz Bustamante for insurance commissioner. The group issued a dual endorsement of Debra Bowen and Bruce McPherson in the race for secretary of state.
NARAL Pro-Choice California bases its endorsements on candidate questionnaires and its Legislative Scorecard, which provides background on incumbents’ voting records and is available at http://www.VoteChoiceCA.org.
NARAL Pro-Choice California is the political arm of the pro-choice movement. It works daily to elect pro-choice candidates, promote pro-choice policy, and mobilize pro-choice voters.
