Californians Reject Divisive, Dangerous Prop 85
Pro-choice victory on ballot measure part of a string of electoral successes in statewide races

SAN FRANCISCO, California – Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, called the victory over Prop 85 a major win for Californians who are tired of divisive anti-choice attacks. Voters rejected this so-called parental involvement initiative for the second year in a row.

“We all support good family communication, but voters once again saw Prop 85 as a deceptive measure that would only threaten our most vulnerable teens,” Everitt said. “In California, we know that the real answer to preventing teen pregnancy is strong caring families and comprehensive sex education that includes abstinence and birth control—not laws that delay teens’ access to counseling and medical care.”

The success in defeating Prop 85 represented part of the organization’s multifaceted strategic political program that included a diverse statewide coalition, grassroots mobilization at phone banks, and door-to-door campaigning.

NARAL Pro-Choice California cheered the victories of pro-choice candidates John Garamendi for lieutenant governor, John Chiang for controller, Bill Lockyer for treasurer, Debra Bowen for secretary of state, and Jerry Brown for attorney general.

“Voters across California are tired of divisive attacks on a woman’s right to choose as we see in other states—and reaffirmed that they support the values of freedom, privacy, and personal responsibility,” Everitt said. “These newly elected leaders will continue our state’s tradition of protecting women’s access to safe, legal abortion while uniting behind commonsense ways to prevent unintended pregnancy, including better access to birth control and accurate sex education. “

NARAL Pro-Choice California is the political arm of the pro-choice movement. It works daily to elect pro-choice candidates, promote pro-choice policy, and mobilize pro-choice voters.
