NARAL Pro-Choice California Applauds Passage of Oakland Buffer Ordinance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 7, 2007 NARAL Pro-Choice California Applauds Passage of Oakland Buffer Ordinance Leading pro-choice group generates more than 60 messages to the Oakland City Council in less than one day OAKLAND – NARAL Pro-Choice California Political Director Whitney Hoyt called the Oakland City Council’s unanimous passage of an ordinance protecting women's access to reproductive health clinics a victory for women's health. The ordinance prohibits protesters within 100 feet of a reproductive health facilityfrom approaching within eight feet any person or motor vehicle seeking to enter the facility for the purpose of interfering, harassing, injuring, or intimidating the person or vehicle occupant. “We applaud the Oakland City Council for protecting access to reproductive health care. Too often, harassment and intimidation are the reality at Oakland’s clinics—blocking access to vital reproductive health services. Thanks to Councilmember Nancy Nadel’s leadership, women and their families are one step closer to safe, unimpeded access to reproductive health clinics in Oakland,” said Hoyt. More than 60 of NARAL Pro-Choice California’s Oakland and East Bay member activists called and e-mailed the Oakland City Council on Monday afternoon, one day before the Council’s vote on the first reading of the ordinance. The ordinance is scheduled for final adoption at the City Council meeting on December 4, 2007. NARAL Pro-Choice California is urging its local members to attend the meeting to demonstrate their support. Supporters of the ordinance include: ACCESS/Women’s Health Rights Coalition, Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women, Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, Berkeley NOW, Family Planning Specialists Medical Group, NARAL Pro-Choice California, Oakland East Bay NOW, Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health, Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, and West Coast Feminist Health Project/Women’s Choice Clinic (partial list).
