Pro-Choice Bay Area Residents Gather at Performers for Choice 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 8, 2007 Pro-Choice Bay Area Residents Gather at Performers for Choice 2007 Elected officials and community leaders come together in support of California’s leading pro-choice advocacy group, NARAL Pro-Choice California SAN FRANCISCO – Prominent pro-choice Bay Area residents gathered for an evening of comic relief at Performers for Choice, a benefit for NARAL Pro-Choice California and the NARAL Pro-Choice California Foundation, on Wednesday evening at Bimbo’s 365 Club. The evening featured performances from The Groundlings, Los Angeles’ premiere improvisational comedy troupe, remarks from Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, and a tribute to Dr. Madelyn Kahn, an abortion provider who received the organization’s Champion of Choice Award. Keenan hailed California’s leadership in protecting choice and urged attendees to continue to use the political process to advance the pro-choice values of freedom and privacy. “In California, you have the muscle—and I’m not talking about Governor Schwarzenegger. I’m talking about your 53 members in the House of Representatives,” said Keenan. “That’s the power of New York, Arizona, Michigan, Montana, and both of the Dakotas combined. And it’s the power to stop dangerous attacks on a woman’s right to choose in Congress.” Dr. Kahn’s designation as Champion of Choice honors her work on the front lines as a provider of women’s reproductive healthcare in Northern California for more than 20 years, despite harassment at her office and protests in front of her private home by fringe anti-choice groups. Dr. Kahn’s commitment is important to women’s access to safe, legal abortion since 41 percent of California’s counties lack an abortion provider. Dr. Claire Brindis and Dr. Kathryn Phillips served as the event’s co-chairs. Dr. Brindis is the director of the Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy at the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF, and a board member of the NARAL Pro-Choice California Foundation. Dr. Phillips is a professor of Health Economics and Health Services Research at the UCSF School of Pharmacy. NARAL Pro-Choice California, which includes more than 150,000 member activists statewide, is the political leader of the pro-choice movement. The group works daily to elect pro-choice candidates, promote pro-choice policy and mobilize pro-choice voters.Contact: Tamara Murray, 415.890.1020
