Californians Will Say "No" to Divisive Anti-Choice Ballot Measure for the Third Time
Pro-choice group launches campaign to mobilize voters against the latest attempt to jeopardize teen safety and family communication San Francisco, California - Today, the secretary of state confirmed that a dangerous and divisive ballot measure will be on the November ballot. NARAL Pro-Choice California vowed to leverage the power of its 150,000 members to defeat this third incarnation of a ballot measure that Californians have resoundingly rejected twice before in 2005 (Prop 73) and 2006 (Prop 85). "We all support the safety and health of California's young women, but this ballot measure will do nothing but threaten our state's most vulnerable teens," said Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. "We must protect all teenagers, because some teens for whatever reason can't talk to their parents. It is our greatest responsibility to make sure they are safe and provide them safe counseling and access to care. Voters in this state have said no to putting teens' health and safety at risk. This year will be no different. In California, we know that the solution to preventing teen pregnancy is promoting communication at home and comprehensive sex education in school." The latest manifestation of this irresponsible initiative, titled the "Waiting Period and Parental Notification Act of 2008," requires parental notification if a minor seeks an abortion, a 48-hour waiting period after the parent has been notified or forces a scared teen to navigate the court system. Today, NARAL Pro-Choice California launched a campaign urging pro-choice activists to sign up to defeat this divisive, dangerous ballot measure. ### Contact: Amy Everitt, 415-890-1020
