California’s Rejection of Third Extreme Anti-Choice Ballot Measure Marks Major Pro-Choice Victory

San Francisco, CA –Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, praised the successful campaign to defeat Proposition 4 —an extreme anti-choice ballot measure that would have jeopardized the safety of the state’s most vulnerable teens.

"Tonight's victory belongs to the vast majority of Californians who acted on their pro-choice values and rejected this extreme ballot measure,” Everitt said. “The voters saw how this deceptive and dangerous measure would put teens at risk. For the third time, Californians voted to protect the health and safety of our teens and to guarantee that all teens, no matter their circumstance, will be able to access professional medical care and counseling without delay. Voters in California know that the real answer to teen pregnancy is family communication and comprehensive, age appropriate sex education.”

NARAL Pro-Choice California communicated with more than 95,000 member activists in the state, engaged 1,000 volunteers across the state, spearedheaded canvassing and volunteer recruitment efforts, and promoted a YouTube video contest that recognized the 10 best videos about Proposition 4 created by pro-choice activists.

NARAL Pro-Choice California plays a unique role in persuading Independent and Republican pro-choice women voters to cross party lines to support pro-choice candidates. In 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice California endorsed six state candidates and fought actively against Proposition 4 alongside statewide coalition partners and allies.
