NARAL Pro-Choice California Celebrates

Pro-Choice Victories Across the State

Prop 4, Congressional and State Candidates

San Francisco, CA – Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, praised the pro-choice voters in the state for the election of pro-choice candidates and the defeat of Proposition 4.

In additional to electing pro-choice candidate, Barack Obama, with 61.1 percent of the vote, California voters also defeated Proposition 4 by a margin of 52.6 percent to 47.4 percent. Had Prop 4 passed, it would have instituted one of the most regressive anti-choice laws in the country.

California also increased the pro-choice majority in Sacramento by electing Joan Buchanan in Assembly District 15, Marty Block in Assembly District 78, and Lois Wolk to State Senate District 5. Voters also reelected Jerry McNerney to the United States Congress, maintaining the number of pro-choice, Bay Area seats in Washington D.C.

“We are proud to have supported Buchanan, Block, Wolk and McNerny. By increasing our pro-choice majorities in Sacramento and Washington D.C., Californians made it clear that they want to move this country in a new direction,” Everitt said. “Voters elected lawmakers committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and opposed politicians interfering in our personal, private decisions. These significant pro-choice wins are a sign that voters want leaders who will defend our constitutional rights, while uniting behind commonsense, common-ground proposals, like better access to birth control, that would prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion.”

NARAL Pro-Choice California’s strategic political program included a diverse statewide coalition, strategic email campaign to our 95,000 member activists, a targeted mail program to members and Republican and Independent women, recruitment of over 1,000 volunteers across the state, and volunteer and grassroots outreach.

NARAL Pro-Choice California is a nonpartisan progressive organization that plays a unique role in persuading Independent and Republican pro-choice women voters to cross party lines to support pro-choice candidates. In 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice California endorsed six state candidates and fought actively against Proposition 4 alongside statewide coalition partners and allies.
