NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Gallup PollWashington, D.C. – NARAL Pro-Choice America, the political leader of the pro-choice movement, issued the following statement regarding the release of a survey from the Gallup polling organization. "The findings in this Gallup poll do not square with the voting patterns in the last two elections cycles," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "It would be a mistake for anti-choice groups to interpret this one poll as a signal that Americans want even more interference from politicians in their personal, private decisions, including a woman's right to choose safe, legal abortion." Keenan cited the following election results: - Voters in South Dakota (a politically conservative state) rejected abortion bans in 2006 and 2008.
- Pro-choice forces have prevailed in five other ballot measures since 2005 (three in California and one each in Oregon (2006) and Colorado (2008)).
- In the 2008 presidential election, voters saw a clear difference between President Obama (who is pro-choice) and Sen. John McCain (who is anti-choice). They elected President Obama by a substantial majority.
- President Obama's victory is not an isolated case, as pro-choice Americans have picked up a net gain of eight pro-choice seats in the U.S. Senate and 44 in the U.S. House since the 2006 elections. http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/elections/
